Clearwater Port

Clean Energy…and an Environmentally Sound Approach for Ventura County and California

Clearwater Port's environmentally sound approach preserves the ocean horizon and the beach - and transforms an existing oil production platform into a natural gas receiving terminal for bringing in clean natural gas - by efficiently using existing infrastructure, Platform Grace. To minimize marine disturbance and protect the beach, Clearwater Port's pipelines will use existing undersea corridors that will connect directly into the SoCalGas distribution network.

The Facts – Clearwater Port's Environmentally Sound Approach:

  • Preserve the Ocean Horizon by Using Existing Infrastructure: Instead of building a new structure off the California coast, Clearwater Port will retrofit an existing platform, Platform Grace, with state-of-the-art technology.
  • Transform an Existing Oil Production Platform. To Bring in Clean Natural Gas: To increase supplies of clean-burning natural gas, Clearwater Port will transform an existing oil production platform into a safe, state-of-the-art natural gas receiving terminal for transporting clean natural gas.
  • Use Existing Pipeline Corridors to Limit New Impacts: To minimize disruption, Clearwater Port will use to the extent feasible the existing and well-documented pipeline corridors.
  • State-of-the-Art Technology: Clearwater Port will employ ambient air vaporizers, reducing its fuel requirements by approximately 80 percent versus technologies that burn fuel to create heat to vaporize liquefied natural gas. Clearwater Port will employ Best Available Control Technology (BACT) to ensure the facility meets or exceeds stringent state and federal environmental and safety standards.
  • Use Clean Natural Gas at the Terminal: The platform's power generators will be fueled by clean-burning natural gas.

Commitment to Clean Air: Clearwater Port is designed to minimize emissions and is working with local, state and federal safety and environmental officials to meet or exceed clean air standards. To protect air quality at the terminal, which will be 12.6 miles offshore, Clearwater Port will upgrade Platform Grace with state-of-the-art engines that have much lower emissions than the original units that powered the platform.

Liquefied Natural Gas Defined

Why do we need liquefied natural gas?

Safely Used Around the World - from Europe to Japan

Around the world, there are numerous existing natural gas receiving terminals, some of which have been in operation for more than thirty years.
